Back to $$$

Yeah, finally I’m working. A thought of further studies did strike but just wanted to face corporate world for a while…This world is reallllllllllllly bad as well as goooooooooooooood .. As usual a paradoxical world…

Lets begin with what I do at Photon Infotech, a privately held company headquarted at Chennai uniquely positioned in the OMR Map along with CTSHs, SATs, n TCSs. I do what aptly is described by my role “IT Consultant”. Ofcourse being a newbie I don’t do McKinsey level consultancy, certainly consultancy with minimal definition of Identifying need and considering pros and cons of different solutions, hitting the pain of the customer and above all bringing business.  In short, what you call as PreSales in a Tech company.

Began with really small projects as small as website development to a two year retainer proposal and yeah certainly lots more to come.  The best part of this role is that you don’t stick to SAP FI module or ORACLE Apps; you simply have ample opportunites to play around with umpteen number of technologies. To name a few Liferay, JBOSS Portal, CMS like Drupal, Joomla, PHPSurveyor (LimeSurvey), BEA Weblogic,  and above all the most favorite of mine ….MOBILE Technologies. Recently we just cracked one in Jave Micro Edition. And also expecting a bigger one sooon.  The live training on iPhone was a super kewl session with a clear understanding of how a simple device like iPhone(based on Cocoa Framework; not Cocoa Powder:P) could actually revolutionize the Mobile Platform. One may also wonder how can a single person be able to learn so much of it, n I’m just faking out here or what?? Fact is we are in Presales, we dont get into nitty gritties to the developer level but yeah we do work around in getting the business context right and work at abstract levels to map with technical fundas and above alll convince the customer…n thats’s why its fun for cool & tech savvy :)

I’m just too tired to complete excitinig this post with stories of my work (esp those of Sales folks) and if my boss is reading he would know why ;) Lets halt for now.. n get back soon ..

What do I want to do in my life??? Just earn some$$$! Noway

I wanna go back to my village!

Sounds weird rt? why is this little girl talking this way right?
But seriously there is so much to cherish and so much to work for there.

Its almost placement time and preplacement talks happening every now and then. And I ask only one question to myself? What value will I create by getting into this job? What will be my satisfaction level. Can someone buy my knowledge and creativity just for sake of petty notes? Should the numbers thrown on slides be the only criteria? How would I shape up in life if I get in somewhere? Should I follow the MNC culture or be as Indian as am?

Zillions of questions running around? But am sure some non-linear algorithm sitting in my brain (to be precise the Cerebrum :p) will search out the right fit where I know I will be creating true alpha (Jargon used in Finance Literature meaning an extra return gained beyong the risk taken). It will consider many parameters like likelihood of being close to parents and most important friend, value-addition to all the stakeholders including Society, amount of independence enjoyed, work-life balance, possibility of eating healthy food, possibility of maintaining healthy life. Overall, something that leads to a sustainable life and a sustainable career.

I know I’m looking for something that may sound elusive or non-practical. But my argument would be that this is the most practical way to take life :P

I would also share one thing about me and Great Lakes. I was never before so philosophical before joining Great Lakes. However these 9-10 months have brought a phenomenal change in the way I process facts, opinions and assumptions floating around in the air surrounding me. I have learned the meaning of Viveka, Vijaya, Vigyan and Vinod. I have started to appreciate the meaning of Karma Yoga. I have begun to realize the meaning of life and spirit of working for all and not just self. Great Leaders and Great Speakers be it Guest Lectures or Professors all have inspired me to rethink, rethink and rethink!

Yes I want to go back to my village sooner or later!!!

ps: Publishing this blog almost after 8 months!! :P

Its jus an illusion ..But its not Maya

•June 30, 2007 • 8 Comments

Guess what! Today was one of those very few memorable and momentful days I happened to gape into the night sky. It just happened to be a beautiful full moon which happens once in a blue moon :D Well, in any case what could be so special about it that I feel like sharing it with you people then? After all, a moon :D Ya!.. But, there is something special. It appeared a bit bigger than usual and I was like: “Honey! I shrunk the sky!”. And  as usual I googled on to find further on it. The findings from msnbc.com reveals that full moon just fooled the earthlings!!  And it is yet another illusion (n not maya as v philosophy students would call it :P ). The moon tends to look larger at times cos earth is tilted on its own axis and so is moon. Thus moon’s path through our sky can be higher or lower depending on the angles on any given night and thus seeming to be enlarged or shrunk (enough pills of astronomy for the day :-P ). To further know about it google further. Am done for my day and got to come out of this illusionised moon maya and get back to POM maya laters :P Happy full fool moon :D

Life has become simpler and wireless!!

•May 7, 2007 • 7 Comments

Life had never been so simple and wireless – thanks to Bluetooth and Wireless Internet via WLAN.

After stepping into a B – School, it is very difficult to imagine a life without a Laptop (a.k.a lappy) and so is the case in Great Lakes. Unlike last year when students had to wait for months, we received during the orientation itself. The cool lappy was not just professional lookwise as the configuration goes like

HP Compaq nx6320/ Intel Core2Duo T5500 (1.66GHz, 667 MHz FSB, 2MB L2 Cache)

1 GB DDR2 667MHz/ 120GB SATA HDD @5400rpm/ DVD-Writer

15” XGA TFT Screen/ Fingerprint Reader/ 7-in-1 media reader

Integrated Wireless Lan 802.11a/b/g & Bluetooth v2.0/Gigabit 10/100/1000

Touchpad Scroll Zone & Keyboard/ 6 cell Li-Ion Batt / Free DOS

65W Smart AC Adapter/ 3 Year On-Site Warranty

HP Backup & Recovery Manager/ TPM Enabled Notebook

HP Compaq nc6320

Well, a kingdom could be lost without a nail and so was my laptop. Being a day-scholar, felt almost handicapped after reaching home as I had to switch to and fro between my pc and lappy for my internet based Ethernet connection. And there comes the prompt customer service by Airtel guys. The technical assistance directed me to use a hub or a switch for sharing the broadband connection which was not a part of their service. Again that would mean few more wires to the already cumbersome computer table. On further inquiry came the thought of preferring a wireless device, and life seemed simpler now.

As any other guy would do, I started to Ritchie Street, the second largest market for Computer spares and peripherals in India with my friend. The device we had in thoughts, Netgear router was in our hands in few moments at Delta Peripherals. Soon after reaching home, tried all tweaks and pranks with the hardware. Finally my lappy was configured with the assistance of Airtel customer care. Guess what??? Now I move around to view the beautiful nature in my balcony and surf on my lappy and then get back to my foamy bed and still hooked to the lappy!!! And all this @2000, in Indian Currency :p

First day First Show @ GL

•April 27, 2007 • 15 Comments

Registration begins by 9 am on 20th April 2k7. And guess what there is a tragic coincidence with this date ?? Well not guessed yet, this day 118 years back, the Nazi leader Adolph Hitler was born. x-( Well anyway there was nothing cruel about this day except for the results of the first test we had @ GL, the so called aptitude test to decide our specialization. Some poor fellows were made victim of this deadly surprise and were suggested to change their very own specialization… In fact one of the guys was like “I know myself for past 15 years, how could u decide my specialization…” But hey hey he sud have kept his cool as this surprise turned out to be the bakra of Junior Crusaders: P Man this joke relieved us from all the tires we had experienced from morning 9 to evening 6. The fun doesn’t end here. We later enjoyed the kewl presentations on the various committees that Glakes offered us to exhibit our professionalism and make the extra 80% of 80-20 learning of MBA oops PGPM classes. Man we students take over right form admissions to placements, food to honor code (folks r fined to some 4k for using mobiles in classes, I would rather buy a new one :P ), events (Latitude) to Glakes’ official magazine (Gravity), IT (Gizmo freaks) to Students council… In short, a student-run organization in the true sense. I call it in the true sense since u hear this sort of committees everywhere, but GL is one of few places where Management is all open to reasonable demands and suggestions made by the committee guys. Later the presentation was interrupted for the day and continued later the next day, as it was already half past 8. And just imagine the first day I make it home by half past 9. And guess what all others but me had to take a test on FA, QA n Micro Economics the very next day. Hmmm we knew this gonna happen every now n then but day 1, (grrrrrrr….) Wavev it was good to spend the whole day with all new faces, some hailing form Delhi, some form Punjab, few form Kolkata, few from Kerala, all in all the epitome of Unity in Diversity ;) n most being work-ex guys but for me. Got to wait n see wats more for this coming year !!!

Some more events happening this week :

Convocation and Inaugration @ CTC

Outbound for the junior crusaders @ Green Meadows Resort,ECR (me missing it cos of endsems:( )

Awaiting events:

Sangamitra??

Lappy arrival??

Another test on May 1st :(

and loooooooooots more fun :D

Fantastic 4 years of college life @ CEG

•April 25, 2007 • 13 Comments

FirstSem: much more relaxing as compared to the life @ DAV, the awesome welcome on day 1 @vivek audi, good mix of folks from different schools of course with lot of Grey matter in their top floor, yet down-to-earth with a tendency to help folks with their magic formulas in math, physics; the exhibition of state-of-art manipulations in physics and that stinking chemistry lab; the series of crushes (probably a puppy crush a day :p); the hectic travels to n from Kilpauk to CEG through the pathetic PTC buses (man I envy when I look @ new deluxe buses these days); the gossips of my sweet Ramya; the small fights between me n Pj to sit next to her (though it sound pretty kiddish now); the ever changing staffs for EMech( man we simply enjoyed this subject :P ) ;once in a blue moon entry of our class advisor n physics sir n his safe exit leaving the more than 50% of syllabus(then we realize Anna univ’s staff isn’t as gr8 as it sounded to be :P ), the axxygen n more imaginative vocal pronunciation of our lilliputian Chemistry sir, and hardly any kind of ragging by the lazy senior studs, the labyrinth of our campus (man I lost my way the very first day), the terrible days at the workshop n many many many other trivias. Seriously till date it is this first that gets us nostalgic about CEG, miss u guys a looooooooooooooooot :( :(

Journey from 2nd to final sem: Here begins our specialization, IT. Well even the thought of folks of IT brings a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig smile on our, cos IT is not just yet another mix of studs, this batch comes with a mix of the most serious pandus (Bhargi, Muthu, Laxmi, Ranjith, Karthi, Srividya, Yuva…), the notorious gang of boys (Su boy,zu gal, turbo, pk (scene fellow :P ), jc, bala…), the hot chicks (Sri, Chets, Subhi, PJ n of course cool savy :P :P…), the hogging hoggarts (banu baby, elephant, turbo again, n m gayu), the tall guys ( prasanna, anand, bala, bhargi), the macho man, the one and only arun(though he joined us only in 3rd semester, i guess), the bakra, pankaj, the extroverts, alok, jc n saran, the mokkai masters( box n sanjay_37 :P ), the invisible guys( love terrorist, senthil,..n few more). I may not have exhausted the whole list but ya every individual has its own specialty and these four years interacting with them was definitely joyous n fun-filled and sometimes hard yet enriching. Each day was a day of learning, oops not the IT syllabus which was terribly designed n out of chronology, learning of life, something that matters more than the mere facts n numbers found in books. This four years tot us more what sitting at home could have, taught us to share, to be patient, to be a good team worker, to have humor in life n not just books n books, to learn to live in isolation as well as a class. Of course there were few differences in our thoughts but soon we coped to live with that difference. And this definitely doesn’t mean we were the best n there were no sad moments, we might have committed some errs, but now when we look at them we soon realize where we were wrong and how we could make better individuals out of our self. As someone rightly said Education is not just about what you book-learning but what we you remember after your school life and apply it in your practical life.

Well now coming to some buzzwords n events of IT which we would cherish n would get all the IT folks reading this blog a bit nostalgic, turbo-turbi pair, kozhi, banu baby, maha-senthi kadalai, thalaivar Mr.Gold, mr cool Manianand sir, the only prof that taught us the subject brilliantly Dr.Saswathi, the intolerable classes of PMM, Bose, KK sir, and probably the majority others :P , the wonderful IV trips, aBaCuS, techofes ..the list goes on n on n on

And finally I would like to wish this whole batch which was simply envied by all others for its unity (esp the guys) , who would now mostly be moving to the outside world the so called Corporate IT world, n others pursuing their graduation n few others getting soon wedlocked, a very very happy n prosperous life. Do keep in touch through mail, sms, call, chats or wavev wavev way. Misssssssssssssssssss u alllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll :(

ps: Guuys I may on n on continue with this story of IT lemme not drab the readers :P And no grudges against with any of the folks mentioned, so just take it eazzzy :) and donot bother much abt typos :P
